Is this a coincidence?

My sixth grade girls cover their notebooks with Tinkerbell stickers. They love Tinkerbell. Tinkerbell paraphernalia is on back-backs, t-shirts and purses. This past year I noticed that Tinkerbell was bearing an uncanny resemblance to the pin -up art of Alberto Vargas. Yuck! Do you think the Disney merchandisers saw that, too? You bet they did. I think that is really creepy.

What do you think?

I don't think this is a coincidence the people at Disney are quite design literate and well versed in their graphics. I don't see why you should think it is 'creepy' Vargas is an international artist of high repute and has brought pleasure to millions.

No, I don't think Vargas is creepy, but Vargas-like images aren't appropriate in elementary school. It is distressing to see Vargas-type Tinkerbell images pushed on little girls. Believe me, most girls this age are not comfortable with things that blatantly sexual, dispite what the media portrays. All I am saying is that it is too bad that Tinkerbell has morphed into a pin-up.

Thanks for your comment.

The worst are those 'Bratz" dolls. Why not just sell them with no clothes on? Yuck.

I thought Tinkerbell stuff was cute and then I watched the Peter Pan movie again and she's a brat! I don't think I want my little girl thinking she's cool, because she was flat out cruel in that movie.

Tinkerbell is a brat (not a Bratz, but the Bratz dolls are honest, in a sick and sleazy way about what they are -brats-, and that is even true about the doll's Britney-as-a school-girl vixen sexuality!), but Tinkerbell is,*sigh*, supposed to be "cute". Did you notice that one of the Tinkerbell pictures, which I got from Google images, has the caption "Whatever", which is the height of dismisseness, or brattiness.

When the school year starts I'll ask my students about Tinkerbell. I'll post their answers.

As much as Tink was a favorite at my house...(the wings, the dust, the flying) that was ALL she found adorable...the costume..too skimpy even then.....go figure.....I like your perception of how it is going and you betcha Disney knows what it is doing as it SELLS......
